Walking it
These are directions from Croy train station to Broadwood Stadium. Its about a 20 minute (mostly up-hill) walk from the station.
You should be aware that there are no shops of any description or pubs or public facilities on either route until you reach the Stadium. Comments regarding these lack of facilities should be addressed to ↪ North Lanarkshire Council's planning department (external link) .......
There are ↪ maps available at this page if you don't fancy reading down this long page. For a more interactive experience, theres now a Google street map (external link) available for most of the walk to Broadwood Stadium.
anyways......to business
Croy Station
Direct trains from/to Glasgow Queen Street, Bishopbriggs & Lenzie on platform 2 (train pictured). Direct trains from/to Edinburgh, Falkirk High, Larbet, Stirling, Bridge of Allan & Dunblane on platform 1. Ticket Office is on platform 2. Access to/from platforms can be made by stairs or ramp.
The buses (numbers 343, 344, 348 & 349) in the background are in the station car park, however they only serve the local area. They do not go to Broadwood.........
.....However on the road bridge at the station there is a bus stop for a limited local service (numbers 43 or 147) which do go near to Broadwood (Craiglinn Interchange).
You will have to cross the road to the sheltered stop for these services. ↪ Clicky here for details about these buses, otherwise, its time for a walk......
.....from the station, turn right on to the main road. Stay on the same side of the road & follow the pavement until you come to a mini-roundabout (4 minutes) You now have a choice of two routes to get to Broadwood.
The road, to the right of the mini-roundabout, is the long walk (@ 20-25 minutes) to Broadwood Stadium. Not recommended, but if you want to go that way go to ↪ this page for directions. If you choose that route, be aware of the construction lorries and cyclists ! ............
........However If you go straight through the mini-roundabout and go up-hill you will be able to use a slightly shorter route (@ 15-18 minute walk to stadium), which is now paved & happily avoids the previous trek through the muddy fields,
This is the route marked in Red on the ↪ hand-made guide-map. Keep following the path alongside the road all the way up-hill, There is no need to cross over.......
........ you will eventually approach another, bigger, roundabout (Balloch roundabout). It is @ a 5 minute walk between the previous mini-roundabout to this one.
You may notice the road-sign for Balloch Roundabout on the other side of the road as you head towards it, showing motorists which turn-off to take for Broadwood.
You, as a pedestrian obviously, will be taking a different route to them, so don't pay any attention as to what that sign says!.......
......When you are at the roundabout, just keep following the (only) pavement, taking the right-hand side turning......
........... after a couple minutes walk from the turn-off, you will see some houses with a road junction just before the housing on the opposite side. You will have to cross the road , preferably before you reach those houses.
To get to the access road for the housing estate, you can either cross when you get opposite the junction or cross at the traffic island (20 yards beyond the junction)........
.... this road takes you into you into the housing scheme known as Craiglinn. Keep following the path-way. Don't be tempted by to use the cut-off lanes, as you will get lost ! The estate is quiet & safe at night......
.....Keep straight on the path. Ignore the cul-de-sac on the right. There are no short-cuts !........
.....keep on the path.......
...not far now..... Go straight ahead, following the pavement through the barrier & bollard. This brings you to a busy, fast road.
Take great care when attempting to cross this road. There are no traffic lights or pedestrian crossing here and there are some right selfish and inconsiderate car users in this area.
Comments regarding this lack of basic pedestrian and resident facility may be made to ↪ North Lanarkshire Council, (external link), who have a civic and legal duty to cater for vulnerable road users.........
........when you’ve crossed the road without any hassle & you've resisted the temptation for a few pints. Where is this bloody stadium you ask?......On your right, there is a car work-shop & an aquatic supplies unit but you're just keep following the path.......
...whilst glancing at the landscape on the other side of the road. What you see is a wasteland on which broken dreams lie.
When Clyde moved to Broadwood, it was to be the centrepiece of an out of town shopping complex with cinema, restaurants & big name stores..... Hasn’t quite happened, possibly due to local government in-actions, but who knows what the future holds ?
Continue on the pavement & glance to your right.....
.....& you'll be rewarded with this view.
Go on. You've come this far. Walk down the hill to the stadium !
Watch out for the pot-holes and over-grown bushes and faulty street-lights on this ↪ North Lanarkshire Council, (external link) path.......
enjoy the game :-)
......when you are at the fast and busy road, the best position to cross is away to the left, at the very end of the pavement & cross at the advertising boards and junction.
Stay on the right hand path after you cross to go to the stadium. However if you have time and wish to have a ↪ few beers or a pub lunch take the left hand path through the underpass. This left hand path also takes you to ↪ Craiglinn Bus Interchange. ........
...end of rant and take a deep breathe.......
